UTMB Mont-Blanc

Carlingford man Oran Finegan recently took on the challenge of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, one of the most demanding trail races in the world. The event takes place around the Mont Blanc massif, crossing through France, Italy, and Switzerland, and is known for its extreme distance, mountainous terrain, and significant elevation gain.

The race attracts experienced endurance athletes from across the globe, with competitors navigating steep alpine climbs, technical descents, and long hours on the trail. Conditions in the mountains can change quickly, making the event as much a test of resilience and preparation as it is of physical endurance.

Oran took on the challenge not only as a personal test but also to raise funds for the Maria Goretti foundationhttp://www.mariagoretti.ie/about/.

Oran stated that the race was one of the toughest challenges he has ever taken on, both physically and mentally.

“It was an incredible experience from start to finish. The scenery around Mont Blanc is unbelievable, but the course is relentless with long climbs, technical descents, and very little time to recover. You have to stay focused the whole time.”

“The support along the route and in the towns was amazing. It really helps when you’re deep into the race and the legs are starting to go.”

“Raising funds for the Maria Goretti Foundation was a big motivation for taking on the challenge. Knowing the race could help support such an important cause made the whole experience even more meaningful.”

“It’s a race that really tests you, but it’s also something I’ll never forget.”

Taking on a race of this scale requires months of preparation and dedication. Completing the UTMB Mont Blanc represents a major endurance achievement and reflects the commitment needed to train for one of the world’s most respected mountain ultramarathons.
